How much does it cost?
Our primary goal is to teach the art of Kempo — not make money. We believe that self-defense training should be available to all, not just those with significant financial resources. Therefore, we keep our fees low. Your first two Kempo classes are free so you can try it out and see if it's right for you. Our monthly fees are competitively priced and offer various options to fit your budget and training goals. Are Tai Chi classes included with Kempo classes?
No. Tai Chi classes are run in partnership with Rock Solid Climbing + Fitness and are on a separate fee structure. Tai Chi class is free to members of Rock Solid and $10/class for non-members. Private Tai Chi lessons are also available; please reach out via our Contact page.

While dedicated weekly tai chi class is not included in the Koga Shin Kan dojo membership, you will learn Tai Chi and its related arts as part of your Kempo training; the demonstration of a Tai Chi form is among the requirements to earn a black belt rank in Kempo. We encourage all Kempo students to also attend weekly Tai Chi class if possible.

Is kempo good for MMA training?
Do you compete in tournaments or matches?
Our form of kempo is not a fighting sport. We do not compete in tournaments or in class. While many schools focus on competition, our emphasis is on preparing you for real-world situations. Our system is focused exclusively on teaching self-defense skills and honing ourselves into better people through rigorous training that emphasizes not just physical technique, but also self-control, respect and compassion. This allows us to explore practical techniques that might be prohibited in sport fighting, but could be crucial in a real-life situation. We believe that true self-defense encompasses more than just fighting prowess. It's about developing a calm, resilient mind, a strong spirit, and the knowledge to avoid or de-escalate conflict whenever possible. We welcome people of all ages, fitness levels, and experience. Is Kempo training safe?
Yes, our style of kempo is generally very safe. Like any physical activity, martial arts training involves some risk of sprains, strains, bruises and other injuries. However, we take precautions to minimize these risks. We emphasize control and precision in our techniques, introduce new skills gradually, and prioritize proper body mechanics and alignment. We teach modifications and variations of techniques to accommodate different fitness levels and physical limitations.

Over the years, I have taught a number of students who have come to Kempo after they were injured (sadly, sometimes permanently) in sport styles or simply felt worn out after years of competition and harsh training. They appreciate our gentler approach which promotes long-term health and allows them to train consistently without excessive wear and tear. In addition to embracing our gentler modes of training, these students typically marvel at the comprehensive skills they had never been exposed to before. Our goal is to keep our students healthy and injury-free so they will live a long life and always be able to defend themselves.


Do I need to be in shape to start kempo training?
No! You don't need to be in shape to start kempo training. We will meet you where you are and help you develop according to your personal goals and abilities. I've often heard prospective students say, 'I really want to come to kempo, I just need to get back in shape first.' This is the wrong way of thinking about it. Kempo is a great way to get in shape! Our classes are designed to be accessible to all levels of fitness, and we will gradually build your strength and endurance as you progress.
Kempo training is a fun and engaging way to get in shape, and you'll be surprised at how quickly you see results.​ We'll work at your pace and help you build a strong foundation. The most important thing is to start and be consistent. The results will come. I've seen many students transform their bodies and their lives through kempo training.
